Narrow Sideboards and Consoles
Standard sideboards are 450–500mm deep, which is why they don't work in a flat. Ours are 250 to 400mm, which is the difference between a hallway you can walk down and one you turn sideways in.
Pick the depth from the room, not the storage: 250mm consoles for a hallway or behind a sofa, 360mm for a living room, 400mm where it's also holding a television. Then check the socket heights before you commit — a sideboard in front of a socket makes that socket useless, and pushing a plug against a back panel is a real fire risk.
Allow 15–25mm for the skirting board unless the piece has a recessed back. It's the usual reason a 600mm alcove won't take a 595mm unit.
