Made to Measure

British flats are full of spaces that are almost a standard size. A 612mm alcove. A 1,740mm wall with a boxed-in pipe at one end. A gap under the stairs that changes height every 200mm.

Those are the ones worth making something for, and they are what this part of the shop is.

What we make to order

  • Narrow sideboards and consoles to any width up to 800mm, at any depth from 200mm.
  • Alcove cupboards and bookcases, scribed to the wall so there is no gap and no dust trap.
  • Narrow wardrobes up to 800mm, including reduced-depth versions for a box room.
  • Under-stairs storage — a run of drawers and cupboards following the rake.
  • Window seats with storage, built in 600mm sections so they get up the stairs.
  • Folding and fold-down desks to a given wall width.
  • Radiator covers with a shelf, ventilated properly.
  • Beds with storage drawers, sized to your mattress and your floor.
  • Room dividers up to 2,000mm high, freestanding or tension-mounted.
  • Kitchen trolleys and hallway benches to fit the gap you've actually got.

What we don't make: anything structural, anything that forms part of the building, and fitted kitchens. We'd rather send you to a joiner than do it badly.

Finishes

Finish Notes
Solid oak, ash or walnut, oiled Warm, repairable, and it ages rather than wears out. Grain varies board to board — that's timber, not a fault.
Birch plywood, lacquered or oiled The exposed laminated edge is the point. Lighter than solid timber, which matters on a third floor with no lift.
Painted MDF, any RAL or NCS reference The right answer for an alcove unit that should disappear into the wall. Match it to your existing paint and it reads as part of the room.
Powder-coated steel For frames, legs and anything that gets moved often.
Rattan-fronted ash Cane webbing panels in doors. Indoor use only — it will not tolerate a damp bathroom or a conservatory.

Tolerances, stated plainly

  • ±2mm on overall dimensions.
  • Scribed units are cut oversize and fitted on site unless you ask for a freestanding version.
  • Your walls are not square and your floor is not level. Nothing in a British flat is. Everything over 600mm tall gets adjustable feet as standard.
  • A colour matched by eye is not a colour matched to a code. If the match matters, ask for a sprayed sample before we make it. We don't charge for one.

How to get a quote

Email support@homartuk.com with as much of this as you have. None of it is compulsory; all of it saves a round trip.

  1. The opening. Width at the top, middle and bottom; height at both ends; depth. Walls are rarely parallel and we'd rather know now.
  2. What's in the way — skirting, a pipe, a socket, a radiator, a window board, a meter cupboard.
  3. What it has to hold. Books are heavy; a television needs a cable route; clothes need a hanging height.
  4. Finish — a RAL or NCS reference, or a photograph of what it sits next to.
  5. Whether it can be fixed to the wall. If you rent, say so and we will design it freestanding.
  6. Access — the clear opening of the tightest door, and whether there are stairs. See Will It Fit?.
  7. Your date, if you have one.
  8. A sketch. A phone photo of a biro drawing has saved more projects than any CAD file.

We come back within two working days with a price, a lead time and any questions. Quotes hold for 30 days.

Lead times

Item Typical lead time
Narrow sideboard, console or radiator cover 3–4 weeks
Alcove cupboard or bookcase 4–5 weeks
Narrow wardrobe 4–6 weeks
Folding desk 3–4 weeks
Bed with storage drawers 5–7 weeks
Under-stairs storage or window seat 6–8 weeks

These are honest averages, not promises made before seeing a drawing. If your date is fixed — a move-in, a baby, a lease ending — say so in the first email and we'll tell you straight away whether it's possible.

Payment, changes and cancellation

  • 50% on order, balance before despatch.
  • Changes are free until we cut, and we tell you the date that happens.
  • After that, made-to-measure items cannot be cancelled or returned unless they are faulty or not as specified. That is the standard exemption for goods made to a consumer's specification under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, and it does not affect your rights if something is wrong with what we send. See Returns & Refunds.

Fitting

Most made-to-measure work arrives ready to stand or ready to screw to the wall, with instructions. Scribed alcove units and under-stairs runs can be fitted by us in England and Wales — ask for a price with the quote. We are not electricians; any socket that has to move is work for a qualified electrician on your side.

Send us the gap — or just the sketch.
